In the Fall 2012 Member's Quarterly, Brian Pascal, the President of the Institute of Professional Management stated that progressive discipline does not work. This article and accompanying bold statement intrigued me because a number of us are afraid to admit that the concept of progressive discipline may have no place in an organization. It is a concept long held by HR types and we revert to it because it is what we have always done, plus it makes us feel better to think we are following a process. Progress discipline certainly has its place in union environments depending on the collective agreement that is in effect, but for those organizations that are not unionized, it is worth thinking outside of the box. As Brian Pascal states "...keeping an outdated and ineffective system simply because we have always done it that way seems rather ridiculous, don’t you think? " I could not agree more!
